Disobedience Leads To Consequences

June 10, 2017

Recently my husband and I added a new member to the family. After searching and looking, we finally found what we were looking for. We had adopted a one-month-old sweet retriever mix. I couldn't resist! I love puppies and who doesn't enjoy puppy love? I do.

Before adopting our cute little puppy, there was only one thing that was preventing us from getting him. At the time we lived in a rental home where our landlord did not permit of us having pets. When I first heard we weren't allowed any dogs I was upset and discouraged because it was a desire of my heart to have one.

Four months later..

Four months went by and still no puppy it wasn't until we were about to move out of the house that we decided to consider adoption one last time. We drove to the adoption center and pondered whether or not we should adopt the puppy we had seen even though our landlord said no while only having less than a month living in the house.

It was a tough decision at first because we didn't want to disobey our landlord, but I just couldn't resist his cute little puppy face, so we went on and adopted him without the landlord knowing. I know it sounds terrible, but this dog had won my heart. And when you're in this kind of position, you don't think what possibly could be so wrong about adopting a puppy that needs a home. It doesn't seem like a bad choice at all if anything it's for the better.

Here is a picture of Hosea, the trouble maker haha!

God sees it all!

My point is how do you think God feels when we try to sneak our little choices and pretend as though God isn't watching and is not aware of anything we do? I believe a good amount of us live life and make decisions based on what we want and think is best for us instead of pausing acknowledging God and asking Him what His best for us is. In the bible, it talks about how NOTHING, not one thing goes unhidden from God including your thoughts and the intentions of your heart.

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." Hebrews 4:13

When I read the scripture above, I tremble in reverent fear of the Holy God of the universe. Because the same fear I had towards my landlord the owner of the house potentially finding out I had disobeyed him. Is the same fear I have towards the owner of my soul who not one thing goes unnoticed by Him. We should all try to live blameless lives and always do what is right in the sight of the Lord.

DEFINITION OF DISOBEDIENCE; "failure or refusal to obey rules or someone in authority."

I used the cuteness of the puppy as an excuse for my disobedience.

If our landlord found out we disobeyed him by welcoming a pet into the house, we would've probably faced the consequences of it which could've probably been us losing a place to stay. Disobeying the landlord made us feel as though we disobeyed God which we did for all wrong doing is considered sin 1 John 5:17.

I thank God for His continual grace over our lives and how patiently He deals with us. There are several stories in the Bible beginning with Adam and Eve where people were punished for their rebellion towards God. Some of the consequences were spiritual, emotional, and even physical death. Below is a list of some of the events where disobedience took place in the Bible.

Genesis 3:6
Exodus 5:2
Leviticus 10:1
Numbers 20:8
1 Samuel 28:18
1 Kings 13:20-23
1King 18:9-12
Jonah 1:2-3

Good News!

The good news is that Jesus came to set us free from sin. And because He came to set us free we can be forgiven. No sin no matter how big or small is new to God or surprises Him. God desires for you to confess your hidden sins in fact "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9.

I'll leave you with a question. What areas and details of your life have you been trying to "hide" from the God of the universe? And what is keeping you from bringing them to the throne of grace?

P.S Dan (landlord) if you're reading this I'm sorry.
